How to appeal a NJ DDD or Medicaid denial

A 'no' is often the start of the process — not the end. NJ families win appeals every day by following these steps.

Deadlines are strict. You typically have 20 days from the date on the denial letter to request a Fair Hearing. Miss the date and you lose the appeal.

The 5 steps

Read the letter carefully
Find the exact reason for denial and the deadline. The clock starts on the date on the letter, not the day you got it.

Request a Fair Hearing in writing
Send a signed letter with name, case number, and: "I disagree with this decision and request a Fair Hearing." Send by certified mail and keep the receipt.

Ask for 'aid paid pending'
If services are being reduced or ended, request they continue during the appeal. Must be requested within 10 days.

Gather evidence
Medical records, school evaluations, IEPs, letters from doctors, and (for DDD eligibility) anything showing the disability began before age 22.
